Yesteryear marine beacons and today's communications | Southgate Amateur Radio News
The annual International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend in August aims to raise public awareness of the need to preserve old marine beacons, promote modern Amateur Radio and foster international goodwill.
So far nearly 140 registrations have been received from 23 countries stretching from South, Central and North America, across to Oceania, Asia, Africa and throughout Europe.
One of the latest registrations was built in the 19th century, the square shaped tower of Brazil's Cristovao Pereira Lighthouse that will be on air as ZV3CP.
The objective of this fun-event is for individuals or groups to set up portable stations at a lighthouse, lightship or marine beacon, for part or all of the designated weekend in August.
Some are in disrepair or the target of vandalism. This is where Amateur Radio portable operations can help draw the attention to the need for heritage protection and restoration of beacons to their former glory.
For the guidelines or to make an online registration for the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend on August the 16th and 17th visit the website www.illw.net
